Monday Mojo – Define Your Happy

What does it mean to be happy?

I ask this question on some of my courses and it’s always interesting to hear the reply. Most people acknowledge it looks different for everyone. But when I ask them to clarify what it means for them, they’re sometimes a little stuck.

Part of this may be because of everything that’s happened in the last two years, during the pandemic. We’ve been swept up in crisis after crisis, drama after drama and scandal after scandal. All whilst the world seems to be moving faster than ever.

Most of us might agree it’s in the big things. A loving relationship. Feeling fulfilled at work.  Knowing we belong.

And yet it can also be in the simplest of things.
A nice cup of tea.
A cool shower after a hot day.
Going for a walk with a friend.

So if you’re feeling a little stuck, here’s what might help.

This week, maybe set the intention to Define Your Happy. It’s been proposed that there are three main ingredients to happiness: moments of joy, a sense of meaning, and forging good connections.

  • What does it mean to feel fulfilled or content?
  • What would contentment look like for you? Where would you be and what would you be doing?
  • What about the smaller things, that amount to self-care?  Things like a warm bath, going to the cinema with a friend or sitting amongst the trees.  They all count.

It might be taking a piece of paper and clarifying your vision for the future. Not just the big things around home or work, but the little things that bring you joy and put a bit of sparkle in your step. Whatever you decide for now, remember this can also change.  What once made you happy, might not do so much now.  It’s ok to rip it up, and start again.
